Experience Jomon Pottery at SIED Event!!
On Thursday afternoon, December 17th, an event for overseas students hosted by SIED was held at the International Student Exchange Lounge on the Kyotanabe Campus. SIED is a student organization for promoting communication of overseas students. So far, they have held events on the theme of Japanese culture for overseas students.
In collaboration with our Doshisha University Historical Museum, they planned a small event related to Jomon culture. SIED members gave an overview presentation about Jomon culture to the overseas students and after that, we tried to reconstruct and make the tools for decoration of the pottery of that prehistoric culture.
Firstly students of SIED members explained that the Jomon culture was a unique culture for more than 10,000 years, and it was a rich society with well managed plant food use as well as hunting. It was a fun commentary including a quiz game.
After that, we moved on to the craftwork of the original Jomon period, instructed on Kunihiko Wakabayashi of the museum. Overseas students struggled with the difficult task of twisting two ropes at the same time with their fingers. But they were gradually becoming able to do it, and were satisfied at the the end. Then they talked each other much about Jomon culture and had a good time.
For a our museum, it was meaningful to take part in the communication of overseas students. The photos show the situation at that time.
